To push purity and potency to the next level, The Extract Factory applies a multi-step process that strips away unwanted plant material while enriching the coveted biphenyls.
Solvent extraction, ultrafiltration membranes and gel-permeation columns are introduced first; lipids, proteins and viscous polysaccharides are removed without damaging the fragile active. Operating temperature, pressure and residence time are fine-tuned for every new batch so yields remain high and degradation is avoided.
High-resolution reversed-phase flash columns follow, isolating honokiol from magnolol and other neolignans. The selected stationary phase and gradient program give superb resolution in a single pass, delivering an off-white powder that is practically odourless and free of coloured by-products.
Crystallisation is then triggered in food-grade ethanol under controlled cooling curves. Mother liquor is separated and the solids are redissolved and recrystallised, cutting residual solvent to < 50 ppm and elevating total biphenyls (honokiol + magnolol) to ≥ 98 %. A final polish filtration removes trace particulates before the crystals are vacuum-dried, milled and sieved through an 80-mesh screen.
Every lot is checked by HPLC-DAD for biphenyl content, by ICP-MS for heavy metals (< 10 ppm sum), by GC-MS for solvent residues and by micro testing for aerobic count, yeast, mould, E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus. Release is granted only after a full certificate of analysis confirms that specifications meet or exceed current pharmacopoeial norms and food-additive regulations.
The result is a free-flowing, off-white to pale tan powder with a mild bark note, bulk density 0.43 g mL⁻¹, moisture ≤ 1 % and ash ≤ 1 %. It disperses cleanly in ethanol, propylene glycol and medium-chain triglycerides, making it ideal for capsules, tinctures, functional beverages, skin-soothing creams and oral-care formulations.
